About Filtered Digits
How This Task Works
Filtered Digits presents a sequence of digits along with an exclusion rule: certain digits must be ignored, and only the remaining digits are entered in their original order. Holding the exclusion rule while selectively attending to the target digits demands simultaneous retention and selective attention.
Unlike simple memory tasks, this task adds the process of "consciously ignoring what should not be remembered." This function — suppressing irrelevant information — is known in cognitive psychology as inhibitory control and is considered a key component of executive function.
Task Background
Inhibitory control is the function of deliberately suppressing irrelevant information and impulsive responses while maintaining attentional control. Tasks designed to measure inhibitory function, such as the Stroop task and Go/No-Go task, have been widely used in cognitive psychology research.
Numerous studies have demonstrated a relationship between working memory and inhibitory control. The ability to efficiently exclude irrelevant information is considered to be involved in making effective use of working memory processing capacity. In everyday situations, the cognitive demands parallel processes such as ignoring background noise during a conversation or setting aside unrelated thoughts while reading.
How to Use This App
Start with the default 5-rule setting. Clearly fixing the exclusion rule in mind before viewing the digit sequence can make it easier to direct attention selectively. Consciously practising the act of stopping yourself when you are about to respond to an excluded digit is a distinctive feature of this task as training. Once your accuracy stabilises, increase either the number of rules or the span length to adjust the load.
Its Place in the TOMOY Series
Filtered Digits is the task in the TOMOY series that focuses specifically on inhibitory control. Where Reverse Digits and Ascending Digits load the combination of retention and manipulation, Filtered Digits focuses on the selective process of deciding what not to remember. It also serves as preparation for Transform Digits, which engages all three executive functions simultaneously.
